Dublin NH Motor Vehicle Accident Photos and story by Mark Donovan SW75

DUBLIN NH - Sept 11, 2005 -- At approximately 7:00 p.m. Sunday night, Dublin firefighters took their lives into their own hands, as they worked to free a 16 year-old town resident from his car. The driver crossed into the opposite lane before striking a utility Pole on Route 137, approximately two miles north of Route 101. The impact literally wrapped the vehicle around the electric pole, causing the pole to split.

Immediately upon arrival, Dublin units called for Public Service of New Hampshire, which started trucks from both Keene and Peterborough, as well as a tow truck, all with police escorts to the scene. Fortunately, the pole did not snap, as rescuers worked feverishly to free the youth, whose feet were well trapped under the dashboard.

Firefighters used virtually every extrication device at their disposal, including portable power tools, an electric winch on the rescue truck, sheer manpower, and hydraulic spreaders (can be seen in photo @ the orange tube). All the while, power surged through the electric lines just overhead.

Despite the danger, crews continued their work. It took approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to free the youth, who was conscious throughout the rescue, shortly after PSNH crews managed to shut down power through the lines.

Early on, a DHART helicopter was dispatched, with an estimated time of arrival of 23 minutes. Peterborough Fire Department's ambulance responded to the scene, and an additional Peterborough engine was dispatched to set up a landing zone, in a field on Route 101 just east of Route 137, which just Saturday and Sunday had hosted the Dublin Fire Company's Annual Steam Engine Meet. Upon landing, the medical personnel were transported directly to the accident scene, where they awaited the patient in the Peterborough ambulance.

Once extricated, the youth was examined by medical personnel, and found not to have suffered life-threatening injuries. The ambulance transported him to Monadnock Community Hospital, and the helicopter was released.

10.26.05 - 0700 - Dublin NH - Working Fire - Rte 101 - Friendly Farm

The Dublin Fire Department, under the direction of Deputy Chief Joe Sangermano, attacked the fire through the front door. Wearing air packs, attack lines were advanced into the building. The fire had had a good start, however, as it had gotten into the walls and ceiling. Heavy smoke was pouring out of the windows and eves. Rotating crews, the fire was attacked aggressively. Second alarm companies raised a ladder to the roof on the side of the building, and, using a power saw, made a "trench cut", to vent the building, and prevent the fire from spreading to the animal area. This cut was successful, as it contained the fire to the front part of the structure.

Departments that responded include Dublin, Peterborough, Jaffrey, Keene, Marlboro, Harrisville, and Meadowood.
