DHART in Brief

A synopsis from the DHART official web site
On July 1, 1994 DHART began operations and received their first request seven minutes after going on-line. DHART was designed to serve the Northern New England region of New Hampshire, Vermont, Upstate New York, Western Maine and Northern Massachusetts.

On December 30th of 1998, DHART put a new helicopter into operation. An American Eurocopter EC135, the aircraft is capable of cruising at 150 miles per hour. The EC135 provides greater lifting capability which is important when operating at high altitude during their hot and humid summer months.

On March 1st, 1999 DHART moved into a new on site hanger which is located next to the helipad by the Emergency Department at DHMC. It provides for an enclosed and protected space for their primary aircraft and the back up helicopter. The hanger also provides office space for the crew and pilots, and houses the state of the art communications center.

DHART Comm is a dedicated communications center, staffed 24 hours a day by an EMT certified Flight Communications Specialist. All flight requests are received and then coordinated through their computer aided air medical software program. The program allows for information capture and in addition, dispatches the pilot and medical crew giving a precise location, heading, distance, time enroute and coordinates for the landing zone.

DHART uses an American Eurocopter EC 135 helicopter. One unique feature in using this type of aircraft is that patients are easily loaded headfirst through the rear "clam shell" doors.

DHART sets up the pre-designated landing sites to help EMS agencies who's service areas encompass difficult terrain. The DHART aircraft is fully capable of landing on highways and roadways including dirt roads day or night.
