Cheshire County is located in the southwest part of New Hampshire. The county has a population of approx. 64,000 and consists of nearly 740 square miles. Major roads in the area include , U.S. route 202 and state routes 9,10,12 and 101. Highest point in the county is Mt. Monadnock at 3,165 in Jaffrey. There are no radio facilities on this mountain.

Cheshire County Sheriff dispatches many towns on 155.070 (136.5 P/L). Cheshire County also dispatches a few towns in Hillsborough County on 155.640 (P/L 136.5) with an often used call sign of KNAK655.

Southwest New Hampshire Fire Mutual Aid Dispatch center at the Keene Fire Department dispatches for the entire county and for communities in surrounding Hillsborough County, and Windham County Vermont and a handful of Massachusetts towns. Total agencies dispatched for are 78 fire departments, 18 ambulance services, and 26 police departments. Dispatch frequency in most cases is 154.430 (P/L 136.5). Fireground for the county is 154.385 (P/L 136.5). Several outlying towns use a repeater input frequency of 153.770. Towns surrounding Keene use 154.430 simplex. Often you will here back to back dispatches from different transmitter sites. U.H.F. links used in the county are 460.3125 for police activities on 155.640 and 460.6375 (136.5 P/L) for a 154.430 link towards Lempster and Unity NH. Note: Links are constantly changing. Try 153.83, 452.375, and 465.6375 and 460.5375 and 460.6375 for activity. Transmitter sites change often also. The dispatch center is staffed 24 hours a day by 10 full-time and 7 part-time communications specialists.

. In 1996, the Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid System dispatched 8,995 EMS calls, 6,116 fire calls, and 21,550 police calls. Rescue and ambulance dispatch may be heard on 155.220 for Cheshire County and 155.265 for Deerfield Valley VT Rescue. Ambulance in route to hospital is usually on 155.340. Usual destinations are Cheshire Hospital in Keene and Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterboro (Hillsborough county) and on occasion Brattleboro Vermont.
