05/31 - Effingham NH FF vs Moose

At 04:15 (Wednesday 5/31) Effingham 2C3 called County Dispatch announcing he had just hit a moose. The somewhat shaken firefighter gave his location as Rte 25 500 feet north of the fire station. He must have been shaken as 2C2 had to remind him that the fire station was on Rte 153. I believe that 2C3 was driving his personal truck, not a fire unit.
An Effingham engine was dispatched to the scene for clean-up, as well as 6A2 for a sign-off.

Police response was from County 10, who was in Jackson at the time, with a 25 minute ETA to scene. Fish and Game 225 was contacted and he gave his okay to offer the moose to any takers. The problem was the moose was still alive. About 10 minutes out from the scene, County 10 gave approval to "Dispatch" the animal. An Effingham unit responded with the answer, we've working on getting a dispatch unit right now.

From what I gather, 2C3's truck limped the 500 ft to the fire station afterwards. Communications were mostly on 154.175

We have converted it into a forestry unit and equipped it with many of our "Ice Storm 98" forestry tools. It has already proved a useful unit on several fires this summer and the extra 1000 gallons of water has been beneficial. We wish to express our thanks to the town of Londonderry NH and it's Fire Department for this much appreciated gift.

03/06 - Groton MA Fire Chief
Groton Selectmen voted unanimously March 6, 2000, to hire Paul Fillebrown Jr. as the town's next fire chief. Fillebrown, a lieutenant in Ayer and son of that town's chief, was chosen from among four finalists selected by a search committee appointed by selectmen. Fillebrown replaces Christopher Kelley, who resigned earlier this year after five years on the job. Kelley, has since become deputy chief in Concord.
The day after selectmen offered him the job of fire chief, Ayer Lt. Paul Fillebrown Jr. declined, saying the position requires more time than he wants to take away from his wife and two young children. Selectmen then offered the job to the runner-up, Joseph Bosselait, Stow's acting fire chief.
He'll be paid within the range of $45,000 to $55,000. Earlier this year, the town of Stow voted to eliminate its Board of Fire Engineers, which oversaw the Fire Department, and enacted a weak fire chief position serving at selectmen's discretion. Groton has a designation that gives the chief more authority.

    Boston's St. Patrick's day Parade:
Just a reminder, all firefighters are invited to march with us (local 718 Boston F.D.) in this years St Patrick's day parade. DRESS UNIFORM is mandatory. We are in the process of sending out flyers to all the locals in the P.F.F.M. inviting them to march, as well as extending this invitation to all department (Professional & Volunteer). Local 718 is dedicating this years march to the Worcester F.D. We have spoken to their union and have their permission to do so.
Last year we had roughly 500 firefighters march from all over New England. This year with your help we will hopefully march over a thousand or two firefighters from across the country. We are hoping to make this an annual tradition for all the firefighters around here to be able to rub elbows together and tell a few tall tales. The parade is March 19th in South Boston and we will be providing transportation too and from Local 718 hdqts. (Florian Hall 55 Hallet St Dorchester 02124)starting @0800-1000 hrs.
Thanks a lot Greg Conlan Local 718's parade committee chairman Boston ladder 7.

As of 0800 on 02-08-00 the FD has started to TEST the high band trucking system. When testing, Base 100 (dispatch) and all the FD units are able to simulcast the traffic on the truck system to 158.880. The good part about this is you can hear all the traffic including portables. I think the tower for the system is on Mount Uncanoonuc so reception is going to be very good. If I hear any more info I will pass it on. Andy SW94

SMOKEY THE BEAR KILLED BY DRUNK DRIVER !
Smokey the Bear, the forecaster of Forest Fire Danger, keeping guard in front of the Derry Fire Station, was struck and killed by a drunk driver shortly after midnight Wednesday morning, Jan 19th. Derry fire officials stated that Smokey and his companion sign were a complete loss. A replacement is not likely to be available in time for the Spring forest/brush fire season!
The evil doer was apprehended by an alert Derry Police Officer a short distance from the scene and charged with DWI. Unnamed sources speculate that vehicular homicide charges are not possible in this case, as Smokey is a bear!

We hope all of our members, friends and reciprocal groups had a happy and healthy holiday season. Thanks to the members who attended our annual Holiday Party for coming out. It was really nice to see a few faces we haven't either seen in awhile as well as make a few new friends.
The West Hartford FD Frequency has been moved to Avon Mtn. Reception should be better. The main Citywide frequency (463.550) is being dropped by the group. The board feels that due to the superior coverage of Farmington and lack of use of Citywide that we would continue to pay the Farmington repeater fee and rename it "Citywide". This is now the main repeater for the group.
In other repeater news our free Hartford repeater no longer available to the group. To replace it C-15 Keith Victor is allowing use a repeater of his free of charge for the time being. The frequency is the same as Providence Citywide's secondary and Philadelphia Citywide's primary it is 452.825 pl 167.9. We will call this machine "Hartford" from here on out. Look at the repeater page for al the changes
