      Public Safety Open House

On Saturday, October 6, 2001 from 1:00 until 4:00 P.M. the Peacham Volunteer Fire Department will hold a public safety open house. Fire Departments, Emergency Medical Services and Law Enforcement Agencies have been invited to help the Peacham Volunteer Fire Department celebrate the new addition to the Fire Station.

There will be contests for Fire and EMS,commemorative T-shirts for sale, Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers, Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, Coffee and Cookies Free for all. The public is welcome. The fire fighter contest ("Over the Barn") will remember a historic event.

When the Peacham Volunteer Fire Department was new, it sought a fire engine. A special Jeep fire engine was touted as the solution for the Town. A test was proposed, could the 1946 Jeep, outfitted as a fire engine, shoot a stream of water over Warren Farrington's barn? It did and the Jeep, still in service as Peacham Engine 2, was purchased in 1950.

The contest will be for teams of firefighters to compete to see who can send a stream of water the furthest distance across the new station addition.

The Emergency Medical Services contest ("Through the Field") will pit teams of EMT's against each other in safely and completely immobilizing a "patient" on a backboard and transporting that "patient" for 50 feet. The fastest team to safely transport the patient wins. Rules for the contests can be found at http://www.peacham.net/fire

Notes on Statewide Mtg of Sept 2001
September's meeting filled over half the seats in the Fremont Fire Station training room. new hampshire fire Points covered were:
Member retention, in light of the radio system problems. Current members who have not rejoined, can expect a personal phone call within the week
Radio System Status - S-1 is hearing quite new hampshire fire well again and is being heard further out than before - S-1 is still having occasional static problems, usually very late at night. SW91 is recording and time stamping each incident for review by nh fire department PSNH. Wednesday/ Thursday overnight, the repeater was being hit by static more than usual. A dead CSQ key usually terminates the static.
S-2 power output is down to 20 watts, but it appears we will live with that for now

Next meeting date and site is to be determined, due to nearness to the MRS Holiday Party and Thanksgiving.

Another issue that has come up, in the meantime, involves our Web Site. Currently we are generating over 100 MegaBytes of traffic per day. Yahoo, the host provider, wants to charge us $8.95-$11.95 a month in order to increase our capacity. new hampshire fire This increase in costs would also give us a few nice added features. Two opinions I have so far are totally opposite. One is strongly in favor of paying a monthly fee and the other is not.
We can still continue to operate as is, however, once we reach our daily quota, site access will be shut off for the remainder of the day.

Aug 27 Statewide Member Update
As many of you probably know, S-1 has been marginal if all useful all summer. This is the new repeater installed in June. I had hopes for it, because the first few days, it worked quite well, aside from audio. Then, the techs went back up a couple times shortly there after, and it went down hill fast. I had been pressing the company to get back up there, as we are coming on 3 months. Saturday, the techs went up, and did some more work.

Members please test and test and test it to see if it works and works consistantely. There is still some of that static noise, but aside from that (I will pursue with PSNH seperately) first indications are favorable. 66 says they found something flakey with the receiver preamp. Keep tuned, transmit jobs, and please comment here in the e groups forum so everyone can evaluate. Thanks for your patience, this hasn't been a very fun NHSW summer. On the good side, S-2 is working great!

Statwide Radio System Update
The repeater on Pack Monadnock "was" performing quite poorly. Since last summer, I have been trying to get something done. No shop seems interested in working on the equipment given the many unknowns, so we have done something substantial and definitive for S-1 (461.400 MHz). Finally we have a solution.

A new-to-us repeater is ready to go, and was installed on Saturday June the 2nd. At the same time, Pinnacle has discovered that there are a few of us users out there, and a lease with rent is due July 1st. Members should get out and do some performance testing to see how things have improved. Non-members can e-mail us and let us know how much better they are hearing us at nhsw@mail.com

We are anticipating the annoying static problems will be greatly reduced. Initial testing indicates that the receiver has just as well or slightly better than the old receiver. On the transmit side you should notice an additional 6dB of signal strength. In the Merrimack Valley Massachusetts region, it appears the increased power output is enough to overcome the "church" in Boston, that was causing listening difficulties!
